"Out of the Darkness: The Jeff Matney
Story"
A
brief 10 minute account of a young man's struggle with autism and
his family's long search to find services for their son. Jeff
came to ASC at the age of 17. At that time, he weighed nearly
300 pounds and had spent five years out of public school.
Because of his aggressive behavior, Jeff spent most of his time in
his room at home. The video follows Jeff's progress at ASC and
his remarkable transformation. It includes footage shot by ASC
employees throughout the years and a touching interview with his
parents, Regina and Thrumond, at their home in Panther, West
Virginia. The major goal of this documentary is to show that
no matter how difficult the off-putting behavior, significant change
can
be made, in a community setting. Suggested audiences include: legislators,
parents, families, students, DD professionals, DD providers (or
potential providers), DD agency staff, state DD office staff.
New to minute update on Jeffs progress since the making of the video
- how he struggles with the death of his mother and continues his
program. Received Honorable Mention 1997 Columbus International
Film Festival, 1996 TASH Exemplary Practice Media Award and 1997 ASA
Excellence in Media video Award.
